About Ancient Herald

Ancient Herald reports new archaeological research on the period from the end of the last Ice Age and the first villages, around 11,000 BC, to the fall of Constantinople in AD 1453. Five desks follow the archaeologists' own periods: the Stone Age (the Neolithic and Copper Age), the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, Greece & Rome, and Byzantium.

Editorial standards

Every story starts from a primary source: a university or museum press release, a scientific paper or an official excavation report. Our desks write the story from those sources, and every story is fact-checked against them before it is published. The editor is Guiseppe Weijermars.

We link every source at the end of a story and name the paper when there is one. We do not publish quotes that a source did not publish. We separate what was found from how researchers interpret it. We do not cover pseudo-archaeology.

We do not reuse photographs from other publications. Our photos come from Wikimedia Commons under a free licence, credited under each photo.

Accessibility

Ancient Herald works with screen readers and refreshable braille displays: every page has headings, landmarks and a skip link, and every photo and map has a text description. Under the headline of each story, Listen reads the story aloud with your device's own voice. If something does not work for you, write to editor@ancientherald.com.

Corrections

If we got something wrong, write to editor@ancientherald.com. We correct errors and note the correction under the story.

Publisher

Ancient Herald is published by Huneform, a studio that reconstructs ancient sites in 3D for museums and schools.
